It was a good week on the club scene with the senior footballers making the best possible start to the Michael Lyng Motors Carlow S.F.C. Written off by pundits and bookmakers alike Tinryland produced a great second half performance to overturn a 3 point half time deficit against our neighbours Palatine at Netwatch Cullen Park. Goals from Mark Morrissey, Diarmaid Walshe and team captain John Murphy laid the foundations for this win and Tinryland will now play Rathvilly in round 2 on week ending 5th August. The final group game will take place on week ending 26th August against Old Leighlin.

At junior B level Tinryland advanced to the quarter final despite a 5 point loss to Kildavin Clonegal on Wednesday last.

In the Talbot Hotel Junior (A) championship Tinryland suffered a heavy defeat to a strong St. Patricks outfit at the training centre on Sunday evening. The first half was a competitive affair with Tinryland leading by 4 points after 15 minutes helped by a great individual goal from Ronan Curran. St Patricks then began to turn the screw scoring 3 first half goals to lead by 3 points at half time. Tinryland’s cause was not helped when wing forward Padraic Whelan was sent off just before the interval. In the second half the men in blue and white could only manage three further points as the Tullow team coasted to a very easy victory. Tinryland’s next outing in the junior (A) championship will be against Leighlinbridge on Sunday 5th August with the final group game against Naomh Eoin on 26th August. Tinryland’s best players on Sunday included Conor Ryan, mark Lawlor, Ronan Curran, Mark Dempsey, Peter Doran and Shane O’Neill.

Bennekerry/Tinryland senior ladies edged a step closer to a 4th consecutive Carlow S.F.C. title with a comprehensive win over Eire Og on Thursday last.

Congratulations to club member Marcus Lawler who became the 2nd fastest Irishman of all time when he clocked 20.40 seconds in the 200m at the Cork City Sports International track and field meeting on Monday last. Marcus will now turn his attention to the European senior track and field championships in Berlin which commences on Tuesday 7th August.

The Annual Tinryland G.F.C. golf classic will take place in Gowran Park golf club on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August. Further details from Cormac Walshe 0861945633 or Mark Morrissey 086 1231208.
