Tinryland Junior B team began their 12 match campaign in the Carlow S.F.L. Div. 5 with an honest performance against a strong Fighting Cocks outfit on Monday 31st March.

Despite losing in the end by 1-12 to 0-10 there were lots of positives to be taken from this game.

The return from injury of Cian Lawlor and the performances of Adam Mullen, David O’Shea, Michael Delaney Alan Kirwan, Paddy Brown and Kevin Barrett auger well for the season ahead. The first half highlights included 2 brilliant Alan Kirwan points and another beauty from Mick Delaney who opened Tinryland’s account in the 7th minute after good interplay involving Owan O’Gorman, Paddy Brown and Greg Murphy.

The home side had opened the scoring from a free in the 2nd minute when their lively centre forward Conor O’Byrne converted a free. Exchanges were fairly even until the 20th minute when a free from O’Byrne ended up in the Tinryland net to give the Cocks an advantage. The Fighting Cocks then kicked on scoring three quick points via Alan Joyce to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-3.

When the second half began Tinryland upped the ante in a big way scoring three unanswered points from Cian Lawlor who was having a stormer. Lawlors point in the 34th minute was the product of great play involving Garry Scully, David O’Shea and Mick Delaney who was narrowly wide moments later with a gilt edged goal chance.

The Cocks then responded with points from O’Byrne, Rory Nevin and Patrick Curry before Tinryland got their second wind with 2 more Cian Lawlor points and another from Mick Delaney who had one of his best games in a Tinryland jersey. With darkness setting in it was left to the Cocks to finish the scoring to leave the final score 1-12 to 0-10.

As stated above this was an honest effort from the men in blue and white. David O’Neill was very steady in goal throughout as were defenders Niall Fitzpatrick, David O’Shea together with honest shifts from Garry Scully, Cathal Whelan, Colm Nolan, James Murphy and subs Alan Byrne and Adam Nolan. The Junior B team is back in action on this Thursday 3rd April with an away fixture in Hacketstown against Clonmore in the deferred 1st round tie while they are at home to St Patrick’s on Monday next 7th April at 6.30 p.m.

Tinryland: David O’Neill, Paddy Browne, Kevin Barrett, Niall Fitzpatrick, David O’Shea, greg Murphy, Cian Lawlor 0-5, Alan Kirwan 0-2, Owan O’Gorman, Adam Mullen, James Murphy, Garry Scully, Cathal Whelan, Colm Nolan, Mick Delaney 0-3.
