Tinryland senior footballers made a great start to the 2014 season when they defeated Kildavin-Clonegal by 7 points in the opening round of the S.F.L. division 1 in Rathcrogue on Saturday evening 12th April. The home side were quickly out of the traps building up an eight point advantage by the 13th minute. The opening Tinryland goal arrived as early as the 2nd minute and it was a beauty by one of Tinryland’s best players Jeff Sutton who rattled the Kildavin net following a sublime delivery by Glen Doyle who also impressed in this game. Kildavin –Clonegal replied through full forward Richie Sinnott who pointed 60 seconds later but a succession of points from Matthew O’Toole, Danny Moran, Paul Broderick (2) and Diarmaid Walshe gave the impression that this would be a walk in the park for the men in blue and white. A number of these scores were the result of great interplay between goalkeeper Trevor O’Reilly, defenders, midfielders and forwards. Tinryland  were then forced to introduce 2 subs by the 20th minute due to injuries with Kuba Dobosz replacing Conor Byrne (hamstring) and Robbie Power coming on for Cian Moore (knock). Over the next 8 minutes Kildavin-Clonegal enjoyed a mini revival scoring 1-2 without reply with Richie Sinnott ghosting in by the Tinryland defence to raise a green flag. Tinryland then upped their game to finish the first half in style. A brilliant move from defence saw Cian Lawlor flick the ball into Paul Broderick’s path and Carlow’s best player in this years Allianz league had the easiest of tasks in slotting home the ball into an empty net. Paul then finished the half in style with a brilliant point in the 29th minute to leave the half time score Tinryland 2-7 Kildavin-Clonegal 1-3.

When play resumed Kildavin-Clonegal now enjoyed the advantage of the strong breeze and they were first to score with a pair of points from Ronan Brennan and Richie Sinnott to narrow the margin to six points by the 40th minute. Tinryland then introduced Jack Lowry into the fray and the opening point of the half arrived in the 44th minute when Cormac Walshe burst through the K.C. defence to win a free which was duly converted by Paul Broderick. Sixty seconds later Tinryland doubled their second half tally when the lively Cian Lawlor showed his skill to slot over a point following great work from Shane Redmond, and Robbie Power. Cathal O’Toole then won another free but this time Paul Broderick was off target. Kildavin-Clonegal replied with a converted free by Daniel St. Ledger but more good play from Robbie Power resulted in another successful free this time from the boot of Tinryland’s new captain Cormac Walshe. The game then was closed out with a Jeff Sutton point following more good play from Paul Broderick. Kildavin-Clonegal closed their account with a successful free converted by Richie Sinnott before referee John Hickey sounded the long whistle to end a satisfactory evening for Tinryland. The seniors will be back in action on Easter Saturday 19th April with a tricky away game against Kilbride. Final score Tinryland 2-11 Kildavin-Clonegal 1-7
