                Tinryland   1-11                                                          Asca 1-4

Tinryland avoided the trapdoor into Junior (B) for the 2nd successive year with a comfortable win over their neighbours Asca at the training centre on Friday last.

Asca  who included a number of former Tinryland players in their line up were first on the scoreboard when midfielder Conor Byrne pointed after 2 minutes but this was to prove their only return in the first half as Tinryland dominated possession but missed numerous chances to wrap up the game at this stage. Padraig Townsend opened the Tinryland account in the 3rd minute and the men in hoops were never headed after Ciaran Larkin successfully converted a free in the 9th minute. Townsend stretched the Tinryland advantage to 2 points in the 10th minute after good play by Larkin but the men from Rathcrogue were way off target on numerous occasions in that opening half and only had a 4 point advantage at the break after further points from the hard working Dean Farrell and Ronan Curran. Asca were dealt a major blow just before the interval when goalkeeper Noel O’Reilly received his marching orders for a high tackle on Liam Fitzpatrick having strayed out a long way from his goal in Laois goalie Graham Brody style.

The 2nd half began in identical fashion to the first when Asca doubled their advantage with a Conor Byrne point but Tinryland replied with 3 quick points from Ronan Curran (free), Dean Farrell and Curran again from another dead ball.

Against the run of play Asca then got a major lifeline when full forward Fionn Kehoe crashed the ball past Chris Townsend after a Tinryland defender was dispossessed. A further Asca point from John Dwyer left only 2 points separating the sides at this stage with 15 minutes remaining. These scores seemed to wake up Tinryland from their mini slumber and Dinny Farrell stretched their advantage back out to 3 points after good play by his namesake Dean. Tinryland then made sure of victory when Ronan Curran found the Asca net with 9 minutes remaining after great combination play involving himself, Conor McGrath and Dinny Farrell.

Dean Farrell capped a great evening’s work with another wonderful point in the 53rd minute before John Dwyer for Asca and Ciaran Larkin for Tinryland traded points before referee Brian Deering sounded the full time whistle which saw Tinryland survive in the Junior (A) ranks and Asca drop down to Junior (B) for 2019.

Asca were best served by Ollie Keating, Govonor Ogbonaya, Conor O’Brien, Conor Byrne, John Dwyer and Fionn Kehoe.
