Tinryland Junior (A) team ensured themselves a place in the division 4 semi- final with their 5th successive victory in this year’s league against Mount Leinster Rangers in Rathcrogue on Sunday 11th May. The south Carlow side fielded 7 players who had lined out the previous evening against our senior team and were competitive for a long spell in the first half when Tinryland had wind advantage. In a low scoring opening quarter it was the home side that first registered a score when midfielder Patrick Townsend pointed in the 6th minute. Rangers replied with an equaliser 2 minutes later before Alan Barrett and Gary Fields both raised white flags by the 15th minute to leave the scoreboard reading 0-3 to 0-1 in our favour. Rangers reduced the margin to the minimum by the 19th minute when centre forward Anthony Jordan pointed before Gary Fields and Chris Townsend did likewise to stretch the home team’s lead out to 3 points by the 23rd minute.

The first significant score of the match then arrived when Tinryland’s top marksman Alan Barrett rattled the Mount Leinster Ranger’s net to leave the half time score Tinryland 1-5 to Mount Leinster Rangers 0-2.

When play resumed Tinryland playing against the strong breeze upped their work rate considerably.

The entire back line of Padraic Delaney, Kevin Barrett, Eddie Dowling, John Jackson, Shane Delaney and Stephen Sullivan were well marshalled by goalkeeper Davy O’Neill. Both teams registered points in the opening 2 minute period with Tinryland player manager Niall Barrett slotting over his sides 6th point shortly after the throw in. By the 33rd minute Chris Townsend had stretched the advantage out to 9 points when he found the net after great play from sub Dean Farrell and Patrick Townsend. Tinryland were in cruise control now and a David Townsend point in the 34th minute was followed by another Chris Townsend goal two minutes later following good play by Greg Murphy and Alan Kirwan to leave 13 points separating the teams. Tinryland then replaced Chris Townsend who scored 2-1 with Padraic Whelan as the south Carlow side managed their 4th point with 20 minutes remaining. Tinryland now had the advantage of an extra man as Rangers were forced to withdraw their stand in keeper through injury and by the 50th minute Tinryland led by 3-11 to 0-5 following 4 further points from David Townsend, (2) and Padraic Whelan (2). Tinryland then emptied the bench introducing Jeff Abbot, James Moore and Jack Lowry into the action as the scoreboard remained ticking. Dean Farrell crashed home Tinryland’s 4th goal in the 57th minute following good play by Padraic Whelan and the icing was put on the cake on the stroke of full time when Alan Barrett rattled the Rangers net once again. Final score Tinryland 5-11 Mount Leinster Rangers 0-7.  After 5 league games now played Tinryland has scored an amazing 28 goals and 51 points and have conceded just 6 goals and 28 points for a plus scoring record of 89 points. Not many adult teams in any grade could boast such scoring stats. The team has 2 further league games in the division over the next 2 Sundays against O’Hanrahans away and Askea at home.
