Tinryland Seniors begin season on a winning note

Tinryland senior footballers began the 2011 season on a winning note on Monday last when they comprehensively defeated Mount Leinster Rangers in the first game of the Carlow S.F.L. division 1 at Rathcrogue .

Mount Leinster Rangers opened the scoring after six minutes when corner forward Pat Gallihue pointed a free but within 30 seconds Tinryland had the ball in the Rangers net when Paul Broderick finished a fine move involving himself, Padraig Delaney and Padraig Townsend. Further points from Padraig Townsend (2) and Paul Broderick (2) gave Tinryland a two point lead at the interval but Rangers could have been in front but for a great save by Tinryland goalkeeper Trevor O’Reilly 3 minutes before the break.

The south Carlow side scored all their 5 points in that opening half bar one from frees converted by corner forward Gallihue (3) and wing forward Eoin Doyle with mid fielder Tomas Brennan scoring their only point from play after 15 minutes.

The second half began with Tinryland showing a lot more urgency and the home side had stretched 4 points clear by the 40th minute after further points from man of the match Danny Moran and Paul Broderick. Substitute Evan Doyle who was operating at full forward scored the first of 2 points in the 45th minute and the game was put beyond ‘Rangers reach when Paul Broderick crashed home his second goal with 12 minutes remaining. Mount Leinster Rangers got a consolation point from the boot of Gallihue with 5 minutes remaining with Paul Broderick closing the scoring for Tinryland in the 57th minute before referee Seamie Doyle sounded the final whistle.

Outstanding for Tinryland were goalkeeper Trevor O’Reilly, defenders Danny Moran, Kevin Barrett and Peter Doran together with Keith Jackson at midfield and forwards Padraig Whelan, Padraig Townsend and Paul Broderick.

Mount Leinster Rangers had hard workers in defenders Gary Kelly, Padraig Nolan and Brian Nolan together with Tomas Brennan at mid field and forwards Eoin Doyle, Patrick Gallihue and Andrew Hickey.
