Despite being a low scoring game that was plagued by wides, this was an entertaining encounter at Spellman Park. Opening points from Shane Keogh and Ken Doyle saw Rathvilly take advantage of the strong wind. However points from Evan Doyle and Robbie Power regained parity for the visitors. JJ Smith’s point in the 19th minute was answered by a surging run from Keith Jackson in the 22nd minute. The remaining 8 minutes of the half was eagerly contested but a barrage of wides on both sides saw the first half end with a low scoring tally of three points apiece.

As often happens the strength of the wind was significantly reduced in the second half. An Evan Doyle point was answered in kind by Alan Kelly and a point in the 6th minute by JJ Smith saw Rathvilly restore their lead. A surge from Tinryland in the 17th minute saw Cormac Walshe slotting over his first point from a free kick. In the 19th minute ace marksman JJ Smith restored the Rathvilly lead. Just as Tinryland fans feared the worst, their team rallied and scored three unanswered points from Evan Doyle, Robbie Power and an insurance point from Matthew O’Toole in injury time saw the visitors through with a two point margin of victory. This was a spirited performance that gives Tinryland hope to reach the knockout stages of the league.
