By Eamonn Byrne

Tinryland senior footballers hoovered up another brace of league points with a satisfactory performance against Kildavin-Clonegal in Rathcrogue on Wednesday 24th April.

The boys in blue and white shot out of the blocks and were 4 points ahead within 3 minutes following Shane Redmonds opening point and an excellently taken goal from Matthew O’Toole following good work from Shane Redmond, Conor Byrne and Danny Moran. By the 5th minute Ian Scully had stretched the Tinryland advantage to 5 points before Joe Roberts opened the Wexford border teams account with a point in the 8th minute. Great interplay between Cian Moore and Jeff Sutton resulted in a brilliant Ian Scully point in the 9th minute. Kildavin-Clonegal doubled their advantage in the 10th minute when Joe Roberts converted a free kick that was brought nearer to the goalposts for dissent from our players. One minute later only 3 points separated the sides when Richard Sinnott landed a long range free for Kildavin but Tinryland stretched 4 points clear once again when corner back Conor Byrne landed a great point following excellent work by Garry Morrissey, Niall Barrett and John Paul Moore. Jeff Sutton then got in on the scoring act in the 17th minute following a pass from Shane Redmond to close Tinryland’s first half account. The final 10 minutes of the half saw Padraig Hickey and Joe Roberts slot over points for Kildavin to leave the interval score 1-5 to 0-5 in Tinryland’s favour.

Tinryland began the second half in similar fashion to the first with Matthew O’Toole and Keith Jackson raising white flags within 3 minutes of the restart. Richard Sinnott and Jackson then traded points before Garry Morrissey stretched Tionryland’s lead to 6 points with 20 minutes remaining. The expected Kildavin-Clonegal fightback then materialised over the next 10 minutes with Daryl Roberts (2) and Richard Sinnott  leaving the scoreboard reading 1-9 to 0-9 by the 22nd minute. Kildavin continued to press but the Tinryland defence was equal to the challenge and with fresh legs introduced in the shape of Paul Doyle, Cian Lawlor, Shane O’Neill and Padraig Delaney The team held firm and scored an insurance point from John Dwyer following a passing movement involving Shane Redmond and Garry Morrissey.
