Tinryland and O’Hanrahans share the spoils in S.F.L. Division 3

by Eamonn Byrne

Tinryland and O’Hanrahans shared the points in this exciting Div. 3 encounter played in Tinryland on Tuesday 17th April. This was a game the home side could have won but a number of defensive lapses in a fifteen minute spell during the first half handed the advantage to the Blues. To their credit Tinryland battled back well in the 2nd half and looked to be heading for victory only to be denied once again by a dubious penalty and in the end the men in blue and white did well to gain a share of the spoils.

Padraig Whelan gave Tinryland a two point lead within the opening 10 minutes before O’Hanrahans full forward Pa Kavanagh showed all his experience to crash home a goal in the 11th minute. Further Blues points in the 15th and 16th minutes left the town side 3 points ahead before Garry Fields found the Blues net in the 25th minute to leave the sides level at this stage. Within 60 seconds the Tinryland defence had a nightmare as the Blues hit Tinryland for two goals before Padraig Whelan added a point for Tinryland on the stroke of half time. A strong team talk by the management saw a different Tinryland in the second half as they tried to reduce the 5 point half time defecit. Dean Farrell slotted over a point in the 36th minute following good work by Matthew O’Toole and further points from John “Brick” Farrell and P.J. Murphy and Dean Farrell once again left the score 3-4 to 1-7 in favour of O’Hanrahans with 15 minutes remaining.

Tinryland then enjoyed their best spell and another Matthew O’Toole point was followed by another Garry Fields goal and a point from Padraig Whelan to leave Tinryland 2 points ahead with 4 minutes of normal time remaining. A Blues point was matched by another from Matthew O’Toole but then disaster struck as a Tinryland defender was deemed to use a foot block and the subsequent penalty was converted to leave the Blues one point ahead entering stoppage time. To their credit Tinryland went in search of the equaliser and justice was done when Dean Farrell slotted over a point deep in injury time to leave the final score 4-5 to O’Hanrahans and 2-11 to Tinryland.

Best for Tinryland: Mark Dempsey, Jack Lowry, Padraig Whelan, Patrick Townsend, P.J. Murphy, Dean Farrell, Matthew O’Toole and Garry Fields.

Tinryland’s next match in Division 3 is a home game against Eire Og on Tuesday 8th May at 7 p.m.
