Tinryland Junior (A) team maintained their unbeaten record in division 3 with a comprehensive win over St. Andrew’s at McGrath Park on Thursday 7th April. Showing 5 changes to the starting fifteen that defeated St. Patricks the previous week Tinryland had the points in the bag well before referee Brian Deering sounded the full time whistle. In an uneventful opening quarter Tinryland looked lively but all they could show for their efforts was a class goal finished by David Townsend after a great cross from Paul Doyle and two points from the boot of Shane O’Neill and top scorer Padraic Whelan who finished with a personal tally of 1-5. During this phase of the game the Tinryland back line of Liam Fitzpatrick, Peter Doran, Dylan Byrne, Adam Dunne, J.P. Moore and Shane O’Neill were doing fine with the forwards moving well except for wayward shooting and kicking the ball into the home goalies hands which they did on 5 occassions. Padraic Whelan’s 2nd point in the 16th minute saw the men in blue and white step up a gear. From then until the finish of the half they racked up a further 1-4 with Whelan’s opportunistic goal in the 23rd minute a result of quick thinking after good play by Conor McGrath who shortly afterwards retired injured to be replaced by Padraig Delaney. Tinryland’s points in the latter end of the 1st half were a joy to behold with McGrath, Adam Dunne, Peter Hennessy and Paul Doyle all showing their ability to take a score from long range. Half time Tinryland 2-7 St. Andrews 0-0.

During the half time break the Tinryland selectors replaced Peter Hennessy and Ciaran Larkin with John Jackson and John Whyte. In the 33rd minute David Townsend was narrowly wide with a clear cut chance on goal after good play by Alan Barrett. 60 seconds later Townsend made amends with a cracking goal following excellent play by Padraic Whelan, Adam Dunne, Gregg Murphy and Shane O’Neill to put 16 points between the sides. The onslaught on the home goal continued with a 45’ converted by Padraic Whelan after a John Jackson shot on goal was deflected away and an excellent Gregg Murphy goal after good play by Whelan. This left 20 points separating the teams with 17 minutes remaining. The home team at last opened their account in the 44th minute when full forward Dessie Dowling slotted over a point but this was immediately matched by another Paul Doyle beauty after good play by Jackson and Adam Dunne. Tinryland then introduced Jack Lowry and Cathal Whelan into the action as Bagenalstown’s mid-fielder David Corcoran burst through to score a goal out of the top drawer to give some respect to the scoreboard. The home team were beginning to show some signs of life now and they added on a further point in the 50th minute via Keith McDonald which was cancelled out by a successful free from David Townsend. Dessie Dowling then caused mayhem in the Tinryland defence when he deflected a high ball to the net and after Padraic Whelan had added on a further 2 points Dowling struck again in identical fashion to leave the final score Tinryland 4-13 St Andrew’s 3-2. Outstanding for Tinryland were Liam Fitzpatrick, Dylan Byrne, Adam Dunne, Shane O’Neill, Paul Doyle, David Townsend and Padraic Whelan. St. Andrew’s best players included Justin Manning, Cathal Cole, Trevor Nolan, David Corcoran, Danny Darcy and Dessie Dowling who scored 2-1. The junior (A) team will be back in action on Thursday next 14th April with a home game at 7.15 p.m. with neighbours Palatine.
