Tinryland’s Junior (A) team reached the Carlow Division 4 league final when easily accounting for Eire Og in the semi- final played at the Carlow training centre in Fenagh on Thursday 12th June.

IN a game marred by a serious injury near the end to Tinryland No. 10 Gary Fields the boys in blue and white maintained their remarkable goal scoring average which has been the hallmark of the season to date. Tinryland has now scored 39 goals and 94 points in 8 games in the league.

By the 20th minute of this game played in ideal conditions on an excellent pitch Tinryland had put 3 goals past the Eire Og goalkeeper M.J. Keane which gave us a somewhat flattering 8 point advantage against an Eire Og side that was much more competitive than the team that lined out against us in the league stage of the competition back in April.

After early Eire Og pressure which was well dealt with by the rock solid Tinryland defence it was goal poacher supreme Alan Barrett who opened the Tinryland account in the 3rd minute with another goal following excellent play by David Townsend. Tinryland could have had a second goal 3 minutes later but Eire Og goalie Keane brought off a great save from Garry Fields. The second Tinryland goal duly arrived by the 8th minute however when Chris Townsend found the net following great approach play by Alan Barrett, Jack Lowry and David Townsend. Eire Og then settled down to whittle away at Tinryland’s lead and between the 11th and 18th minute there were only 3 points separating the sides following points from Corey Harmon (2) and minor star Reece Denieffe.

Good work by Alan Kirwan, Gregg Murphy and John Jackson resulted in Tinryland’s opening point in the 19th minute from David Townsend and an excellent point from Garry Fields one minute later was the product of great interplay between himself, and Niall Barrett. Garry was on fire at this stage and more good play from Niall Barrett and Chris Townsend saw the Tinryland wing forward crash home the 3rd goal which was quickly followed by a Chris Townsend point following good play by Padraig Delaney, Garry Fields and Alan Barrett. Half time score Tinryland 3-3 Eire Og 0-3.

The second half began with Tinryland enjoying the advantage of the significant breeze but it was Eire Og who got on the score sheet first when centre forward Corey Harmon raised a white flag which was cancelled out one minute later by a Jack Lowry beauty to give us a nine point advantage once again. David Townsend then extended the advantage when he converted a free won by himself before Padraig Whelan scored a brilliant point in the 37th minute. Eire Og replied with a point from midfielder Garry Powell before David Townsend crashed home Tinryland’s 4th goal following more brilliant play from Gregg Murphy and Garry Fields. Eire Og then had a gilt edged goal chance but with goalie Adam Murphy beaten the cross bar saved Tinryland. Two more points from Garry Fields and David Townsend were matched by Eire Og scores from Shane Corcoran and sub Shane Noonan who was putting a pep in the Eire Og step at this stage. A Gregg Murphy point in the 46th minute following good play by sub Dean Farrell was followed two minutes later by Tinryland’s 5th goal from Chris Townsend. This was a really well worked score following a great passing movement involving centre back Shane Delaney, Padraig Whelan, and David Townsend. The final score of the match in the 52nd minute was an Eire Og point from Corey Harmon before Garry Fields suffered an unfortunate injury to his knee which ultimately resulted in the referee blowing up the game a few minutes early after Eire Og sportingly agreed to allow treatment to the injured player prior to the arrival of an ambulance. Tinryland will now face either Askea or Kildavin-Clonegal in the Division 4 final next week and will go into the game with confidence after a very good display from both backs and forwards with the defence in particular led by Kevin Barrett, Shane Delaney, Stephen O’Sullivan, Jack Lowry, John Jackson and Padraig Delaney rock solid. At midfield Gregg Murphy and Alan Kirwan turned in a great shift while the forward lines of Garry Fields, Padraig Whelan, Chris Townsend, Niall Barrett, Alan Barrett and David Townsend were lively throughout.

Final score Tinryland 5-9 Eire Og 0-8.

Tinryland: Adam Murphy, Padraig Delaney, Kevin Barrett, Stephen O’Sullivan, John Jackson, Shane Delaney, Jack Lowry 0-1, Gregg Murphy 0-1, Alan Kirwan, Garry Fields 1-2, Padraig Whelan 0-1, Chris Townsend 2-1, Niall Barrett, Alan Barrett 1-0, David Townsend 1-3. Sub Dean Farrell, Garry Scully.
