Tinryland Junior footballers made a good start to the Junior B championship campaign when they accounted for a gritty Naomh Eoin side at Spellman Park Kildavin on Thursday 30th July.

This game was won in the opening half by the men in blue and white hoops as they raced into a 5 point lead within 6 minutes of the throw in. Alan Barrett accounted for the opening 3 points which were the product of great interplay by Dean Farrell, Andrew Hanley, David Townsend and Gregg Murphy. The impressive Hanley then scored the next 2 points himself following good play by Dean Farrell, Eddie Dowling, Padraic Townsend and David Townsend. Indeed Tinryland could have been further ahead at this stage but for some inaccurate shooting which resulted in 8 first half wides by the eventual winners.

Naomh Eoin opened their account in the 10th minute when centre forward Eanna Kavanagh raised a white flag. Garry Fields increased the Tinryland advantage to 5 points once again when he slotted over a point in the 16th minute before Colin Rea converted a free for the Myshall men. A quickly taken free at the other end by David Townsend resulted in another Garry Fields point before Rea clawed one back for Naomh Eoin with 9 minutes remaining in the first half.

One of the best scores of the game then arrived when following good play by Padraic Townsend, Garry Scully and Dean Farrell, David Townsend scored a point to increase the Tinryland lead to 5 points once again. Cillian McCabe who was Naomh Eoin’s best player on the night made it a 4 point game before the final act of the half was a superbly worked goal by Andrew Hanley following excellent play by Adam Mullen, Garry Fields and David Townsend. Half Time score Tinryland 1-8 Naomh Eoin 0-4.

A lower scoring second half saw David Townsend and Colin Rea trade points in the opening ten minutes before Killian McCabe for Naomh Eoin and Padraic Townsend for Tinryland did likewise in the 41st and 42nd minutes. Tinryland then got a crucial score when a superb long delivery by Padraic Townsend put namesake David through one on one with the Naomh Eoin goalie and Tinryland were suddenly 10 points clear with 17 minutes remaining. This score however was to be the last of the game for Tinryland as they took up a more defensive formation to try and protect their lead. In a low enough scoring final quarter Naomh Eoin narrowed the Tinryland lead to 5 points with a goal from James Kehoe and a pair of points from frees by Killian McCabe. In all Tinryland kicked 12 wides in the game and this is an aspect they will have to work on before their next championship encounter on Thursday next 6th August against Mount Leinster Rangers in Ballon at 7.30 p.m.

Outstanding for Tinryland were Eddie Dowling, Sean Kirwan, Adam Mullen, Andrew Hanley, Padraic Townsend, Shane O’Neill and David Townsend.

Eoin Murphy, Matthew Roberts, Cillian McCabe, Eanna Kavanagh and Colin Rea were prominent for the Naomh Eoin men.
