Tinryland made it 3 wins from 3 games played in the S.F.L. division 1 when they overcame St. Andrew’s at McGrath Park on Sunday evening. The destination of the league points was never in doubt after a whirlwind opening 15 minutes when the men in blue and white kicked 7 points from play without reply. Diarmaid Walshe opened the scoring after 30 seconds and 6 further points from Niall Lowry, Cormac Walshe, Matthew O’Toole (2), Padraic Townsend and Diarmaid Walshe were just reward for Tinryland dominance at this stage. With Co. players Shane Redmond and Danny Moran back in the defence the Tinryland rearguard worked tirelessly to keep the home team scoreless and when St. Andrew’s did breakthrough Trevor O’Reilly brought off a couple of fine saves to prevent goals from the Bagenalstown team. Tinryland were guilty of a number of missed goal chances in the opening half also before St Andrew’s opened their account in the 25th minute when Andrew Beaton converted a free. The home side doubled their tally two minutes later when Co. panellist Darren Crooks raised a white flag. The final act of the first half was a Padraic Townsend point for the winners which left the half time score Tinryland 0-8, St. Andrew’s 0-2.

When play resumed Tinryland began where they left off with a Cormac Walshe point and a well worked goal by his brother Diarmaid which left 10 points separating the sides.

Further points in a 3 minute spell from Keith Jackson, Padraic Townsend and Matthew O’Toole extended the lead to 13 points before St. Andrew’s got a goal when Darren Crooks drifted in past the Tinryland defence to give his side a lifeline. Diarmaid Walshe and Andrew Beaton traded points before Tinryland extended their advantage once again with a wonderful Cathal Gaffney point. To their credit St. Andrew’s never gave up and they could have had another goal but for stern defending by Tinryland corner back Adam Dunne. Both sides then began emptying their benches with Tinryland introducing Conor Ryan, Shane Webb, James McGrath, Mark Lawlor, Ciaran Larkin and Paul Broderick into the action. St. Andrew’s introduced Andrew Casey, Justin Manning, David Miley and David Corcoran at this stage and enjoyed a productive spell with 4 Andrew Beaton points before Tinryland replied with points from James McGrath (2), Paul Broderick and Cormac Walshe.

On the stroke of full time St. Andrew’s hard working midfielder John Doyle scored a final point for the home side who still are seeking a first win in the senior ranks since their promotion.

Outstanding for the winners were Trevor O’Reilly, Shane Redmond, Adam Dunne, Padraic Townsend Rory Doyle, Matthew O’Toole, Diarmaid and Cormac Walshe and Cathal Gaffney. St. Andrew’s had prominent players in Martin Cummins, John Doyle, Jamie Clarke, Darren Crooks, Andrew Beaton and Jamie Whelan.
