Tinryland minor footballers are assured of a semi final spot in this years Carlow M.F.C. after their 5th consecutive victory against last years Co. finallists St Andrews in McGrath park on Monday 26th August. The home side were first to register a score when Jamie Clarke slotted over a point in the 4th minute. Diarmaid Walshe put Tinryland back on level terms one minute later when he converted a free. St Andrews should have been a goal ahead  by the 8th minute but their goalbound shot by the centre back rebounded off the upright. At the other end Andrew Hanley’s shot was saved by the Bagenalstown keeper. In the 13th minute Ciaran Townsend put Tinryland ahead when he pointed after good work by Barry Power, John Fleming and  Dermot McGuill and 3 minutes later Ciaran had the ball in the St Andrews net with a classic goal following good work by Luc Corcoran, Owen O’Gorman and Dermot McGuill. Two quick points by the impressive 16 year old Niall Lowry increased the Tinryland advantage and when Ciaran Townsend scored another goal in the 18th minute following more good work by Diarmaid Walshe, Conor O’Toole and Dermot McGuill,  Tinryland  led by 2-4 to 0-1 with two thirds of the match still remaining.

The scores continued to flow for the remainder of the half with points from Owen O’Gorman and Niall Lowry supplemented by a goal from the hard working Andrew Hanly to leave the half time scoreboard reading Tinryland 3-6 St Andrews 0-1.

When the second half began the Tinryland mentors introduced Brian Hosey into the fray and similar to the first half it was the home side that scored first when Jamie Clarke once again pointed. Brian Hosey was not long in finding his shooting boots and his point in the 37th minute put Tinryland 13 points ahead once again. This score was the product of a great passing movement involving Owen O’Gorman, Diarmaid Walshe and Dermot McGuill. St Andrews then enjoyed a mini purple patch and a Daniel Hickey point  was followed by a piledriver which was brilliantly saved by our goalkeeper Ciaran Byrne.

Another St Andrews point from midfielder Alan Whelan was followed by a great goal from the same player to leave the scoreboard reading 3-7 to 1-4 mid way through the second half. A Dermot McGuill point following good play by Adam Murphy and Brian Hosey stemmed the St Andrews fightback but it was the home side who continued to take the game to Tinryland and they were rewarded when Andrew Kane slotted over another point in the 47th minute. Indeed the margin could have been reduced even further only for another world class save by Ciaran Byrne from Conor Murphy’s rocket with the Tinryland keeper diving full length to keep his goal intact.

With the St Andrews  challenge held by the water tight defence of  Ciaran Byrne, Luc Corcoran, Mark Lawlor, Conor O’Toole, Brian Mullen, the excellent Fiach Byrne and Adam Murphy  Tinryland added further points via Andrew Hanly and sub Conall O’Se (2) before the home side added two consolation points from Alan Whelan and Jamie Clarke to leave the final score Tinryland 3-12 St Andrews 1-7.
