Tinryland’s  Junior( A) team stayed in contention for a place in the knockout stages in division 3 when they defeated Leighlinbridge by 8 points at Paul Monaghan park in Ballinaboley on Tuesday 16th May. The league points in this game were won by a whirlwind start from the men in blue and white hoops who had the ball in the All Black’s net on 3 occassions in the opening 6 minutes. Paul Doyle who had a good game in the No. 14 jersey rattled the net after only 60 seconds and further goals by midfielder Peter Hennessy and wing forward Dean Farrell together with a Doyle point in the 3rd minute gave Tinryland a flattering 10 point advantage before Leighlinbridge opened their account in the 7th minute with a point from one of their best players, veteran Val Fleming. Leighlinbridge settled down after this score and added a brace of points from Fleming and Leigh Conlon before Tinryland steadied the ship with points from the accurate place-kicker Padraic Whelan (3) and Paul Doyle. The final act of the first half was a Leighlinbridge point from Brian Kavanagh which left the half time scoreboard reading Tinryland 3-5 Leighlinbridge 0-4.

Leighlinbridge who are propping up the division began the second half in determined mood and Val Fleming gave them some hope when he crashed the ball past Ciaran Byrne in the 32nd minute. Further points from Leigh Conlon and Fleming reduced the margin to 5 points by the 36th minute before Padraig Whelan stretched the Tinryland lead back out to 6 points in the 40th minute. Leighlinbridge were building momentum all the time however and 3 quick points from Conlon (2) and Fleming suddenly left only 3 points separating the teams entering the final quarter. Tinryland responded with points in the 46th and 47 minute from Padraic Whelan and David Townend before Brian Kavanagh kept the home side in contention with a 55th minute point. This score proved to be the final one for the All Blacks and Tinryland made sure of victory with a Padraic Whelan point in the 58th minute and a Dean Farrell goal on the stroke of full time which ensured that Tinryland are still in contention for a semi-final spot when they visit Bennekerry on Tuesday 23rd May to play Palatine.
