Tinryland senior footballers jumped a significant hurdle in this year’s Michael Lyng Motors S.F.C. when they accounted for a gritty Old Leighlin side at Spellman Park Kildavin on Saturday 25th August.

Lining out in their away jersey Tinryland were never headed in this encounter after Paul Broderick successfully converted a free in the opening minute. It got even better 3 minutes later when full forward Glenn Doyle side footed the ball to the Old Leighlin net after great approach work from Conor O’Toole. Tinryland were enjoying a lot of possession in the early stages but were rocked back to reality when a David Bambrick attempt  for a point dipped in under the bar to bring the men from Molaise park back into contention. A Sean Kinsella point left the teams all square entering the final quarter of the opening half but Tinryland upped the ante at this stage with midfielders Niall Lowry and Conor Byrne more than holding their own. 4 points in a 5 minute spell from Rory Doyle, Niall Lowry, and Paul Broderick (2) restored Tinryland’s cushion and when Diarmaid Walshe pointed after good play by Paul Broderick Tinryland led by 1-7 to 1-2 when referee Pat Murphy sounded the half time whistle.

With wind advantage the expected Old Leighlin fightback began in earnest and after a lengthy delay due to an injury to Conor Byrne a pair of points from Pat Hickey and Aaron Amond in the 37th and 43rd minutes reduced the Tinryland lead to 3 points before Matthew O’Toole lifted the siege with a wonderful point mid- way through the half. Old Leighlin continued to attack but Tinryland were rock solid in defence and Seamus Kinsells’s 49th minute point from a free was the final score conceded.

Tinryland capped an all- round good performance with further points from Diarmaid Walshe and 2 successful frees from the in- form Paul Broderick to qualify for a quarter final spot against Mount Leinster Rangers on week ending 16th September. Final score Tinryland 1-11 Old Leighlin 1-5
