Tinryland senior footballers recorded their second victory in this year’s league when they accounted for Mount Leinster Rangers in round 5 of the S.F.L. division 1 in Rathcrogue on Saturday 10th May.

This was a workmanlike performance from the men in blue and white who enjoyed the bulk of the possession throughout this game played in blustery conditions. In a low scoring first half Tinryland raced into an early lead with a point from Evan Doyle after good work from Danny Moran, Matthew O’Toole and Mark Dempsey after 3 minutes. 30 seconds later Tinryland doubled their tally when centre forward Richard White slotted over a point following a pin point pass from Paul Doyle.

Tinryland were enjoying the bulk of the possession at this stage but were finding difficulty in hitting the target and it was the 12th minute before the next point was scored by Richard White following good play from the O’Toole brothers Cathal and Matthew. The defence well marshalled by Goalie Trevor O’Reilly, Mark Dempsey, John Paul Moore, Shane Webb, Owan O’Gorman, Jeff Sutton and Danny Moran were easily dealing with the Rangers attack at this stage but the scores were hard to come by at the other end. It was the 20th minute before Tinryland troubled the umpire again when the returning Ian Scully pointed after a great pass from Evan Doyle.

Evan Doyle then was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury to be replaced by Padraic Whelan and by the 25th minute Tinryland led by 5 points after Paul Doyle scored a great point following good work by corner back Shane Webb. Three minutes before half time Glen Doyle who played well at midfield burst through the Rangers defence to score another point following good play by Cathal O’Toole, Ian Scully and Paul Doyle. The latter was then forced to leave the field of play to be replaced by Garry Morrissey as Mount Leinster finally opened their account when wing forward James Kelly pointed. Half time score Tinryland 0-6 M.L.R. 0-1.

The second half was only 60 seconds old when Tinryland scored the only goal of the evening when Glen Doyle crashed the ball to the net at the motorway end following excellent play from Richard White and Matthew O’Toole. Padraic Whelan then stretched our advantage out to 9 points with another point following good play from midfielder Cormac Walshe. This score however proved to be Tinryland’s last for a full 20 minutes as Mount Leinster Rangers set about reducing the defecit.

Between the 33rd and 50th minute the south Carlow side tagged on 5 unanswered points from Luke Roche, Derek Byrne (2), Andrew Hickey and Roche again to leave the scoreboard reading 1-7 to 0-6 with 10 minutes remaining. As darkness began to set in on the gloomy evening Tinryland finally awoke from their siesta to add on 5 unanswered points of their own courtesy of Matthew O’Toole 52nd minute, Padraic Whelan 53rd minute following a pass from Cormac Walshe, Owan O’Gorman following good play from Richard White and Matthew O’Toole, Ian Scully from a free in the 57th minute and the final Tinryland point of the night from Glen Doyle in the 59th minute.

The scoring ended when Mount Leinster Rangers scored their 7th point of the evening via corner forward Luke Roche in the 60th minute. Final score Tinryland 1-12 Mount Leinster Rangers 0-7.
