Tinryland stay in contention for semi final spot in S.F.L. Div. 3

Tinryland junior A team are still in contention for a semi final spot in division 3 after a hard fought but well deserved win over Old Leighlin in Rathcrogue on Tuesday 19th June. With both teams chasing the last semi final place in this years league this game took on championship flavour. The visitors who included former senior legends Johnny Nevin, John Carey, Aidan Nolan and Benjy O;Brien opened well and were two points up within the first 10 minutes. Kevin Barrett  operating at corner forward opened Tinrylands account in the 15th minute following great work by John Dwyer, Richard Whyte, and Dean Farrell. David Townsend then linked up with Brian Farrell to score the levelling point in the 19th minute and when the same player pointed a free 5 minutes before the interval Tinryland took a lead for the first time. The home side stretched further ahead in the 26th minute when John Dwyer scored a brilliant point following good work by Patrick Townsend, Kevin Barrett and Richard Whyte. The closing stages of the first half saw Old Leighlin get back on level terms with 2 points to leave the half time score at 4 points each.

The second half was only seconds old when David Townsend restored Tinryland’s lead with a point from a free and David was again on the score sheet in the 33rd minute when he slotted over another point following good work by Mark Dempsey and John Dwyer.

Old Leighlin stayed in contention with a Johnny Nevin point in the 35th minute before Garry Fields replied for Tinryland to leave the score at 0-7 to 0-5 with 20 minutes remaining. Another Old Leighlin point in the 44th minute was matched by a great individual score from Matthew O’Toole and when the same player pointed with 12 minutes remaining Tinryland were ahead by 3 points. The closing stages were played out in a welter of excitement but Old Leighlin could only manage one further point to leave the final score 0-9 to 0-7 in favour of Tinryland. The last semi final spot in Division 3 rests between Tinryland and Eire Og with Tinryland going through if they defeat Naomh Eoin in the last round.  Kildavin, St Andrews and St Mullins have already secured semi final spots.
