Tinryland minor footballers made the best possible start to this years championship campaign when they defeated one of the heavyweights of the competition Eire Og

in round one at Rathcrogue on Monday 24th June. The opening stages of this game were evenly contested with both goalkeepers being called into action shortly after the throw in.

After 8 minutes of stalemate Tinryland were first to open their account when Diarmaid Walshe pointed in the 8thminute. The home team then doubled their account in the 14th minute when Adam Murphy landed a superb 45. There was a bizarre hold up of 6 minutes then as the referee was adamant that all players should be wearing gum shields and he ordered Eire Og to address the situation. When play finally resumed Eire Og were denied a certain goal by a brilliant save from Tinryland goalkeeper Ciaran Byrne before Ciaran Townsend increased the Tinryland advantage when he pointed in the 20th minute. Another great save from Ciaran Byrne kept Eire Og at bay  before Andrew Hanly pointed to put Tinryland 4 points ahead just before the end of normal time in the first half. As play entered the 6 minutes of stoppage time Eire Og  finally opened their account with a Colm Hulton point in the 31st minute and amazingly the town team were on level terms 3 minutes later when substitute Thomas Walsh crashed home a goal following a poor clearance by the home defence. Half time score Tinryland 0-4 Eire Og 1-1

Three minutes after the restart Eire Og edged ahead for the first time when wing back Lee Moore slotted over a point. It got better for the town team over the next 7 minutes with further points from Thomas Walsh and Colm Hulton leaving them ahead by 3 points with 20 minutes remaining. A Diarmaid Walshe point in the 44thminute reduced the margin to 2 points before an uncharacteristic error by Tinryland goalkeeper Ciaran Byrne gifted Eire Og another goal which put them 5 points ahead with 15 minutes remaining. Instead of wilting under this setback Tinryland hit back in the best possible manner scoring a goal from the penalty spot by Fiach Byrne and a beauty from Kuba Debosch all in the space of 60 seconds. Tinryland were on a roll now and a combination of great defending and two further points from the excellent Diarmaid Walshe left us ahead by 2 points with 10 minutes remaining. Evan Kelly for Eire og left the minimum between the sides when he pointed with 9 minutes left but Tinryland were not for stopping now and substitute Brian Mullen rocked Eire Og  for the 3rdtime when he crashed home a vital goal in the 54thminute. Further points from Brian Mullen and John Fleming added the icing to the cake and Tinryland ran outcomfortable winners in the end on a score of 3-8 to 2-5.

The minors will be back in action on Monday next 1st July with an away fixture to Michael Davitts at a venue to be decided at 7 p.m.
